Qualifying disk

I want to upgrade to XP, using a clean install. I have Office 97 on my
machine, which I'd have to reinstall after the HD is wiped clean and XP
installed.
BUT: My Office 97 CD is an "upgrade disk". It won't be able to find a
qualifying program after XP is there. Is this true? meaning, I can't do a
clean install and still keep my office 97?
or:
Is there any way I can capture something / document something from my
existing Office 97 installation to use as proof for my Office 97 upgrade
installation after XP?

Since you do not possess a qualifying product, you cannot
install the upgrade version of Office 97. One would need
the actual "qualifying product" installation CD to insert in
the CD drive when prompted to do so.

If you own any Office 97 CD, you can purchase an upgrade version
of the new Office 2003.

HMM. So I understand that whatever proof I had installed, such as the
programs or registry entires etc. would be lost with a reformat. and there is
no way to "capture the fact that I'm a bonafide customer." Too bad nobody has
thought of that.

I guess the Powerpoint 2003 upgrade I bought would also be useless after a
clean install of XP.

The document you pointed to lists Microsoft Works as a qualifying document
for Office 97 upgrade. I do have the Works suite 2000 disks that came with my
Dell. Do you think I could do a clean install of Xp, then Works 200, then
Office 97? And if yes, would only install Word or the rest of the Office
suite as well?

The Office 97 Upgrade probably will not detect the
Works 2000 CD version as a qualifying upgrade since
it was released after the release of Office 97.

You may wish to contact Microsoft Office Technical Support
at (425) 635-7056 for additional assistance and ask them
what do do.

Office 97 will see WORKS as a qualifying product, at least
for version WORKS 4.5.

I've seen a full office suit upgrade run happily given a valid version
of MS Word as a prereq. It was a fresh installation and Word had to
be installed. YMMV

I called the number you gave me.
It looks like I'm out of luck either way. Once XP is installed (clean or
otherwise), Office 97 won't run even if I could install it. They say Office
97 does not _run_ under XP.
Well, so much for what the Win Update Advisor program told me. It did not
point out my Excel 97 and PPt 97 as problems. But the support people said it
won't work. And what's worse, I can't even "test" it out.

If you all have any ideas, I'll be grateful. Otherwise, it's back to Win98,
eBay the unopened boxes of XP upgrade and PPT 2003 upgrade that I bought for
50 cents on the dollar.

Thanks Mikey
That's good news. I guess what that means is it will work, but Microsoft
won't certify that it does. Their Upgrade Advisor program didn't find fault
with it. But the official line from them (I have it on email) is that it
won't.

And the second is that a clean install is out of the picture. Because my
Office Upgrade disk will have nothing to find as qualifying.

Which leads to the next important point: Upgrade disks are kinda dangerous.
On a full system cleanup, you have to start with the very original disks, and
reinstall the subsequent upgrades. (What if I had Off 97 installed over Off
95 or something) Would have to start with 95, reinstall 97 etc. And hope that
each version was supported in the new OS. Lesson: Too many upgrades spoils
the soup. At one point you have to buy a full copy.
