When I have an IE 8 window open, I experience a flickering in the taskbar.
This stops when I minimize the window or run the cursor over it. Have run
antivirus, spyware, malware... everything's good. Should I worry?

Hi,

Do you have the G'Mail Taskbar notifier installed? or the Google Task bar
search box installed?

On Win7 you can click on the Task Bar Notification area and then choose
which 'services' you want displayed on the Task Bar. (other OS versions you
need to disable these items from msconfig>Startup.) Ensure you have the
latest versions of Google's software also. Its been a while but the last
time I checked GMail notifier was flakey with IE8.

Do you have the Favorites bar or the Links bar displayed on the Task bar?
You may have placed a Web Slice or RSS feed link in the root section of one
of these folders and it is causing the Task's Bar' Favorites and Links
Toolbars to update. Right click on your web slice or RSS links and choose
the Properties menu. Check that you do not have settings to update your
Feeds and Web Slices too frequently (one a day or week should be sufficient,
Ebay Web Slices you may want updated hourly).

Thinking about it I guess that you have more than likely placed your Suggest
Sites Web Slice in your Favorites root folder? You can just delete it from
that location and the next time you start IE it will create a new Suggest
Sites web slice in the root of the Favorites Bar
(\userprofile\Favorites\Links). You can move it to a sub-folder of Links to
hide it from view without causing folders above it to be updated each time
it is refreshed/viewed.

Regards.

The essential 'expertise' required for your question is expertise with
Google. For example:

Is this "taskbar" on the right-hand side of your screen as you told us
yesterday in your original thread?
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...7538d2a6215fb4

Did you upgrade to Win7 or is it a brand-new computer with Win7
preinstalled? Is it Win7 64-bit?

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE in No Add-ons mode:

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

3. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in Win7? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

4. Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Thanks for your response.

I've got the Google search bar installed.

No favorites or links in the taskbar.

Suggest sites web slice folders are deleted.

still same deal.

Thanks for your response.

Win 7 came preinstalled on a brand new computer (64 bit).

Flicker happens with NO ADD ONs.

Likewise with resetting IE Advanced Settings.

Using McAffee (antivirus/firewall) and SpySweeper, current and supported.

As far as other applications (free trials)... nothing that I can find.

??

Thanks again, Happy Holidays!

Sorry,

Another question.

What brand is the computer?

Some Alienware computers may come packaged with AlienGuise which Will
Definitely cause your Task bar to flicker. (among other things.)

Most reputable 'brands' bundle additional software with the Windows OS. The
type of program that will be making the flicker is likely to be something
that is customizing/branding the look of your Windows desktop or If you have
open File Folder Toolbars on your Taskbar, will be updating the display of
the Task bar when changes are made in the Toolbar's shell folder.

It is normal for the Task Bar to flicker once or twice during windows
startup, but otherwise

If it is not a big issue, you can always turn on Autohide for the Task Bar.
Right-click, select Properties and the check "Autohide" from the options.

Rob,

Sincere thanks for your attention to my question. I'm on a HP G60 Notebook.
I think I'm going to give the autohide a try for a while... see how that
works. Thanks again.
