Question on Firewall

Wonder if the built-in one way firewall is safe, compared to the two way firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, etc. The reason
for asking this question is, I am not sure if I should allow some of the programs that ask for Internet connections.
Any comments will be highly appreciated.

Be careful with firewalls if you use your computer in a network. The Windows
firewall causes enough problems connecting to other computers. Some of the
commercial/free firewall programs can be an even worse nightmare.

I find the built in Firewall in Vista enough for most persons security
needs, its easy to configure and prevents incoming intrusions.

Using the Windows fireall breaks 2 of the 3
cardinal rules for safe browsing:

1) Use a good firewall.
2) Never open email from Paris Hilton.
3) Never use Microsoft software online.


In this test the Windows Firewall came in last
among dozens, though it's hard to figure out

If you only have a one-way firewall then you'll
probably find out later if you get some kind of
inection. (Most viruses, etc. will try to call out,
so they'll trip a 2-wat firewall as soon as they're
onboard.)

You also won't know about spyware, which includes
corporate spyware. (Which includes installed
Microsoft software.) It used to be common decency
for software not to go online without asking, but
these days a lot of corporate software does so.
On the other hand, if you want your software to
auto-update and don't care about music players,
etc. spying on you, then it's only infections that
you need to worry about.

I'm sorry Alias, but I'm inclined to agree with Andre. I haven't used any
other firewall other than the Vista firewall since the launch of Windows
Vista. As for 'calling home' what information, exactly, is Microsoft worming
from your PC that you find so intrusive? There is more 'identifiable'
information gathered via any website you visit than there is from the
Windows Firewall. Any information sent via the Windows Firewall is none
identifiable - unless you class your ISP details as an intrusion in which
case every single website should be avoided. But then again, I forgot, in
your eyes, Microsoft is Big Brother. I've never used Linux I wonder how much
information that gives away? Or maybe it is so secure no one can obtain any
incriminating evidence!

We have had enough trouble just to access our own network printers with ZoneAlarm. (On a normal
fresh loading caused no problem, but updating was a pain with ZoneAlarm. We have been using Sygate
Personal Firewall for a long time, but that does not work for Vista). Thanks for your comments.
