I just came off of a clean format and the first teo updates that become
avaiable before it will download anything else is an update for windows xp
that has something to do with flash player I think. and the other one is
windows installer 3.1 after that you can download sp3 etc. what I am
wondering is why is installer comming up is this a new update. it isn't
somethintg that gives you a choice whether to install it or not because the
checkboxes are grayed out.

Apparently the edition of Windows that you just installed needs to have
Windows Installer 3.1 installed before proceeding any further.
As to the " update for windows xp that has something to do with flash
player I think ", that *should* not be one of the updates first offered.
If you are positive that the update being offered is for FlashPlayer,
then decline and Hide it by unchecking the box next to it.
When all updating is finished, go here and have Adobe update
FlashPlayer: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

that would make sense if I had a different version than I have used to
reinatall it in the past but it is the same version I have used for the last
year.. and like I said this is the first time it has come up. did a disk
partition last night so I don't know if that had anything to do with it or
not :s

also had to restart before the screen that said setup is starting windows
before it got to that screen... so not sure if that would possibly be the
cause or not.

Yup, that's the *very* first update that should be offered at WU or via
Automatic Updates:

Software update 898461 installs a permanent copy of the Package
Installer for Windows version 6.1.22.4
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898461

> Note This change in behavior applies only to express installation packages that are downloaded from
> the Windows Update site or through Automatic Updates for Microsoft Windows XP.

I wasn't aware it could be uninstalled as there is *no* uninstall folder
for KB898461 shown being created in it's installation log,
KB898461.log.
KB898461 has no relation to FlashPlayer whatsoever and those removal
warning messages are way too general. Take them with a dose of salt and
tequilla <w>

Windows Installer 3.1 has been revised to Windows Installer 3.1 v2

Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

Which ServicePack level is the XP installation media at ?

when it offers the update it is at sp2 but like I said this is the first time
that has come up as usualy it just has the first update... right now I am in
service pack 3 and it is fully patched. mostly I was wondering if the fact
that I did those two things that were mentioned in the above posts had
something to do with that comming up...
