Question about profile picture

I would like to kindly ask a question about profile picture.
Is the picture in my Live online profile the same as in Messenger and is it
synchronized or not?
I think the first day I opened my Live profile I saw the same picture that I
selected for messenger, but now it's empty. Also WL Mail displays the same
picture as Messenger when logged in to Live.
So are those separate or the same pictures?

Your Messenger display picture shows up in the What's new feed, but otherwise the Profile
picture is separate from Messenger.
