Question about UAC

ok this may be a little long but i cant really get a strait answer, I
recently bought a brand new laptop and someone told me brand names dont
matter its just preference, so i got an hp and it was one of the better ones
and vista came installed on it, and when i let the geek squad check it and
add stuff to it, i turned it on and it got to the login screen and just
turned completely black for up to 1 minute, so we took it back and they said
it was to do with the User Account Control, and thats what was causing my
problem. So they turned it off and now it works perfectly. My question is how
beneficial is this UAC to me, like will i be more likely to download
something i really shouldnt and mess up my computer or is it fine how it is
without UAC turned on, or i guess since the computer doesnt work properly
with UAC turned on should i just return it?

You're not more likely to download the malware, but it's more likely to
actually run and do something harmful. With UAC turned on there are some
actions that Vista will not allow until you tell it that it was indeed you
that asked for that action. Running without UAC is foolish.

Do not send email

A new computer should be able to run with UAC turned on. If it can't they
have configured something wrong. Take it back to them and insist they
configure it properly. Once it's running properly you can then decide if you
want UAC on or off. My recommendation would be to leave it on. Here's a link

If that is UAC something is very wrong.
If their fix was to disable UAC, return the computer and purchase from
somewhere that can give reliable service.
You probably want UAC active to help you keep control of the computer.
It seems the Geek Squad simply covered their error with another more
serious error.
At the very least demand $ back for whatever Geek Squad did.

The "Geek Squad" lied. The problem is that you let those incompetents
touch the computer.

Yet another reason to keep Geek Squad away from any computers.... I run
Vista with UAC in and it runs just fine. Sounds like they messed up
"adding stuff"...

alrite i went back and got an even better computer than i had last time and
it still does the same damn thing!!!! now i know i didnt get jacked up w/ to
bad computers.. its somthing they installed or did.. can i do a system
restore to what it origionally was and wont loose anything or what should i
do now =\

UAC is basically babysitting for those who shouldn't own a computer :P

That is happening on the new computer as well?
Something is wrong with this computer also.
Find the restore media and perform a Clean Installation, especially if
you have reason to believe Geek Squad added something.

It is normal for the screen to go black, but not for anywhere near a
minute, a second or two, yes.
Also on new computers, you will see UAC more often as the computer
gets configured.
Once you are done installing and setting up, you should rarely see
UAC, perhaps a few weeks, depending on the users.

UAC may have a way to go before it is perfect and it has already come
a long way, but UAC is not "babysitting".
Instead it is a tool that helps the user keep informed on the actions
of the computer.

i figured as much but still.. my computer wont work right with it turned on,
as in after the log in, it takes a few minutes to boot up.. theres something
wrong, and im just curiuos if anyone knows whats up, and i know i didnt get 2
crap computers in a row
