I read that there are people that are having problems after installing the
update KB973879 my question is when was this update released? as I didn't see
it on any of the monthly updates and it hasn't been offered.

I am running Vista home premium 64 bit.

Who knows? It certainly was not a critical security update and was pulled
on 29 Aug-09 anyway:

<QP>
Important A known issue was found with this update. This update, which was
previously released, is no longer available. If you experience Stop error
issues after you have applied this update, follow the instructions in the
"Known issues" section to uninstall the update.
</QP>

PS: I believe that only those running HP computers encountered the problem
so perhaps you'd best ask HP Support why those running an HP computer with
"certain multiple processors" encounter a Stop 0x0000003E error message when
they try to install Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2008 SP2 in the first place?

that is what I was wondering. I thought it was for all versions of Vista
didn't think it was just for sp1.

This update also crashed my Dell M1640 running Vista 64-bit. I got rid of it
pronto and everything is fine now.
