Question - Verify Automatic Updates Working?

Hello,

I recently purchased a new computer running Windows XP Pro, SP2 and I'm
not sure if Automatic Updates is really working. With this new computer,
I have yet to have Automatic Updates download any updates for me. I have
Automatic Updates turned ON and to check for updates everyday at 5:00 AM
and download them. This is the "recommended" selection on the Automatic
Upates tab.

Periodically I will visit the Windows Update site, and on 2 occassions I
have come across Critical Updates but have never had the little Update
Icon displayed by the clock telling me my updates are ready to install.

A few things to note:

1. I'm running Norton System Works 2005, with anti-virus auto-protect
enabled and in the Security Center control panel I have the box checked
saying that I'm monitoring my own virus program.

2. Checking Component Services the Automatic Updates is status is
Started and type is Automatic.

3. I checked the WindowsUpdate log file in C:\Windows, and see no
entries at 5:00 AM that indicates it's looking. Is there any error
message/code I should look for? I have seen this (below), but I'm not
sure if it's from my action or automatic updates.

4. There is very little installed on this computer, and I'm running the
latest version of Spybot and Ad-aware SE including latest definitions,
so it's clean. So I can't think of any conflict.

5. My internet security setting on IE is set to Medium.

6. The Windows firewall is ON and the computer is always on (with
broadband).

7. I have no problems downloading updates from WindowsUpdate manually
and the computer is up to date, but only because I did so manually
(http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us)

I've been reading this group for a while and the Microsoft KB, but
haven't found anything related to my issue. A few questions:

1. How long will it take from the time Microsoft makes the updates
available, to the time my computer (5:00 AM daily) will download them?

2. Given that I have found 2 different critical updates manually, am I
being too impatient for the updates to be downloaded?

3. Windows Update is not listed as a Trusted Site. Should it be?

I should note that my previous computers had the exact same Automatic
Updates settings and they have worked with the same broadband and
router/firewall.

How can I verify Automatic Updates is really working? Assistance please.
Thank you.

Jim

Based on comments in this and other newsgroups I'd say your major problem is
you have Norton installed on your system.

As a matter of course I install all updates manually. I go the WU site
to see what updates are needed, then download the update file by going
through the KB or security bulletin and save that file. I burn a copy
to CD for later use if needed, then apply the update at a time of my
choosing, to watch what happens, and to control any reboots that might
be needed. I also then control how many get installed at once -
generally doing only one at a time. Other than allowing the system to
get updates for AV definitions automatically, I don't like that level of
updating being done when I can't see what's going on or control it. Yes
it's more work but if you keep on it, it's not really that much.

BTW there is no reason to tell the security center not to monitor the AV
component. It should talk to Norton just fine.

How is Norton preventing Automatic Updates from working? I had it on the
last computer with no problems. Please provide more information. Thanks.

"Jim Y.",

For Automatic Updates to work, the Microsoft Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) needs to be running. To find out if you have any updates
that you need, first check the Windows Update website:
1. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This should take you
automatically to http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
2. Scan for updates.
3. Choose Custom Scan
4. Verify whether you need any critical updates. If you do, proceed to step
5. If not, then stop here.
5. BITS may not be running:
a. Click Start
b. Click Run
c. type services.msc
d. Click OK or type the <Enter> key
e. In the Services window, look for Background Intelligent Transfer
Service
f. Double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service
g. In the middle of the Properties window, make sure the Startup type is
set to "Automatic"
h. Just below the Startup type, verify that the Service status is set to
"Started"
i. If it is not, click the Start button, and wait for the service to
start
j. Close the properties window
k. close the Services window
6. Try Automatic Updates again and see if it works.

Please reply back to this group and let us know how this goes.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
