I am trying to have windows 7 running inside virtual pc which will be hosted
by windows XP.
Can someone tell me if the latest Microsoft Virtual PC could be hosted by
windows XP or not?
If not, can windows 7 running inside the previous version Virtual PC 2007?

The latest "Windows Virtual PC" will only run on a Windows 7 host.

Windows 7 will run as a guest in Virtual PC 2007, but if you do not have
hardware virtualization it may run very poorly, because VPC 2007 was not updated
for Windows 7.

Windows 7 guest runs fine on VMWare workstation without hardware virtualization.

.... if you use VMX builder (also free) to build the machine.

Really? How come?

I haven't used VMWare Player since I got Workstation...

The latest version is full featured and allows you to create VMs, you
get almost everything from Workstation but Teams, multiple Snapshots
and Clones, or Virtual Rights Management features for end-point
security.

Great! I didn't know that.

So it's really not just Player now, it's Workstation Light.

Yes, I just saw that the snapshots aren't there.
The new one is VMWare Player 3 and it handles USB just fine as well as
allowing Aero in the Vista/Win7 guests. And it runs 64 bit Windows if
you have the processor for it (with VT) even though you run a 32 bit
base OS for hosting Player3.

What I don't understand is from where VMWare is going to get its
revenue since Player3 surely will undercut Workstation sales.
Of course once you start using snapshots you may not want to be
without, but still....

And the big support contracts for ESX and everything that goes along
with ESx

Actually (at least on Workstation 6) the requirements for x64 guest are

-- Revision D or later of AMD Athlon64, Opteron, Turion64, and Sempron

-- Intel Pentium 4 and Core2 processors with EM64T and Intel Virtualization
Technology"

I have Athlon64 on Socket 939 which does not have hardware virtualization, but I
can use x64 guest (Win7) on x86 host (XP).
