Is Vista really the horrible OS that I'm hearing about? All I hear is, "Stay away from Vista." I love XP, but you can't get it easily any more. I'm about ready to buy a MAC from what I'm hearing about the freezes, crashes, etc. of Vista. True or False?

Yes.

I hear that a lot too.

Try www.newegg.com.

Stick with XP and let's see what Windows 7 is like when it comes out
later this year or early next year. Even Microsoft has admitted Vista is
no good.

If you get a good system with a good amount of memory, Vista will ru
well

On a personal note, Mac's are way over priced for what you get. Ge
your computer built by a local computer store so when it breaks [if/whe
it does], you'll just have to take it to the shop instead of driving t
the mall [Apple store]

Good luck

If you buy the latest top of the line PC with about 10GB RAM and get a Microsoft Certified Professional to install Vista for you and maintain your PC on a regular basis, I would recommend Vista.

If not, do yourself a big favor and just go out and buy a Mac.

You can get many PCs and laptops with XP installed and also a copy of Vista included if you wish to be a masochist.

Vista has too many user annoyances and only a very few obvious improvements.
Basically, MS is trying to suck money with incremental changes to get improvements out.
We will never get a good OS, because if we do, we will never upgrade. Fact!

Vista has the following impediments, among many others
UAC - protects you from yourself more than anything else and adds more "do you really want to do this ..."
Some app need to be "Run As Administrator" or they won't/
Some apps need to be run in XP compatibility mode or they won't run.
Aero is too noisy. Try reading a window caption. Very difficult.
Captions are transparent which is really visual noise. useless.
You are no longer the admin of your PC, even though you are the only user and the owner of the PC.
You have to find a way to become superuser by asking for help. Very poor.
Then Vista nags you that you are doing what you really need.
Vista is still ergonomically poor, it is inconsistent from Windows itself to Office applications.
e.g. mouse scrollwheel works correctly in Windows Mail or Outlook etc but not in Windows Explorer.
why is this, because MS has absolutely no quality control that is user oriented.

There is a lot more, but that is enough for now.
Sad, isn't it!

A flash video is NOT "test driving" it, moron.

False.

The first released version of vista was truly awful.
Vista with the service packs and updates is now very stable and quite
nicely behaved on all the systems I have used.

BUT, If you're going to cough up the hard earned, it's probably best to
wait for Windows 7 which is much nicer. ;-)

On new hardware I'd go with Windows 7 - the beta works well for me.

As for a Mac - if you have the money, very nice.
Mac OSX is immune to 99% of the malware, trojans, viruses out there.
Macs are expensive and a pain to get fixed.
I have a shiny new Macbook Pro (bought by employer) with Bootcamp; this
has WinXP, Vista, Win7 beta, OSX and Open Suse 11 KDE.
Handy for application compatability testing...

Windows 7 is said to be alot better than Vista
If you can wait for it to come out then that would be your best option

I have Vista HP pre-installed on 4Gb + 2 core and 3Gb + 4 core machines.
No problems, it's fast and stable. Networking no trouble, includes NAS
and router and previously with XP and W98. One PC runs in Classic mode
( I always have since W95 )and the other full Aero with no detectable
difference in response.

You will get every answer from superb to diabolical but bear in mind few
people who use it without problems will be using this group.

I use Vista ultimate x64bit and I'm ok

I had problems at the start (due to the fact i had not set-up vist
very good), but after a re-do jobby (format - reinstall), I have had n
problems. Ok i get the odd crash but hey, i just restart the PC an
boom, back on track

I play lots of games, old and new and have no problems (well part fro
GTA 4, but thats another story all together).

So basicly in my view, Vista is ok. at the end of the day, XP has it
own set of problems.

So if you wanna pay s*** loads of money for W7 (bear in mind it don'
get released till December/January, if it gets released on time) then b
all means go a head, but for now i am waiting for SP2 to be released fo
vista

VISTA DON'T RULE BUT IT A-OK FOR ME
