I know this is the wrong newsgroup because I can't find a Windows Live Space
newsgroup to post but when you update your blog are your messenger contacts
sent an email when you update your blog? I have all my communication
preferences set to "Anyone on the internet".

No, but they will see a "gleam" next to your name on their messenger list.

Steve,
Do I have to be logged in for my contacts to see the "gleam"?

No, the gleam is supposed to appear based on the fact that you have activity on
your Space and remains if you are logged in or not.
If your contacts are also on your Friends list in Spaces, they can sign in at
http://home.live.com and select "Friend's Updates" to see all recent updates by
anyone on *their* friends list.
I'm not sure what you're looking to achieve, but I think you might want to look
at RSS feeds for your contacts to subscribe to if they are looking for updates
as you publish them. They would need to use a feed reader.
