I am currently running Windows ME and want to upgrade to Windows XP. I am
concerned about losing files (.doc, .xls, .pps, and .mp3) and existing
software not working with XP. I ran the Windows Upgrade Advisor and
specifically it called out DirectCD 3, Easy CD Creator 4, and Norton
Antivirus Software. Anybody have experience in this area. Any helpful tips,
do's and don't's?

Roxio www.roxio.com is up to EZCD 7, only versions 5.5 and
newer work properly with XP. You'll have to buy new burning
software, there is no upgrade available. Ditto for Norton,
you need newer a/v software, buy it at a discount, there is
a rebate for the upgrade.

Uninstall the old software before you upgrade to XP, then
reinstall the new software.

If the XP upgrade works well, your data and applications
will be safe, but things do go wrong at times requiring a
format and clean install, so be sure to burn backups to CDs
before you uninstall. Also write down critical account info
and passwords. If you do that, everything will go well. If
you don't you are inviting a crash and burn.

It would be a good idea to get a newer version of your anti-virus program
anyway.. to save money, try one of the free a/v programs available.. they
get good reviews..

Use Easy CD to save .doc, .xls, .pps, and .mp3 files to CD before you
upgrade to XP.. then get Nero to replace Easy CD with money saved by using a
free a/v..

Free firewalls work well too.. Zonealarm, Sygate etc..

Upgrade memory to 512mb..
