quick launch items disappeared

I have a new Vista home PC. After a day or so the quick launch toolbar was
empty. It was switched on but no icons. if I switch it off, then any open
windows on the task bar move left close to the "start" icon and if I switch
it back on they move to the right to make space for the quick launch icons -
but there's nothing there. I looked at the quick launch folder - ok. I
added several shortcuts to the folder so there were 10 shortcuts there and
two - only two - appeared in the taskbar - but after a while they
disappeared too!
what's going on!

Hi, David.

I can't picture just what you are seeing. But I wonder about 2 things.

First, is your Taskbar locked? Right-click on the Taskbar and make sure
that there's no check in front of Lock the Taskbar.

Second, have you tried to drag the little QL end marker? It's hard to spot,
especially on Vista's black Taskbar. But hover your mouse over the right
end of the QL toolbar and see if you get a double-headed arrow. If so, drag
it to the right until you can see all - or at least more - of your QL icons.
(If there are more icons than can be displayed with your setting, you SHOULD
see a small pair of chevrons indicating that there are more. Do you see
these chevrons?)

If that doesn’t work, post back and we'll try harder. ;<}

and note the folder that have the quick launch shortcuts has been moved from
what it was in XP. In Vista it's in
c:\users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Hi David,

This tutorial may help you with Quick Launch. You can look at the
related links to see how to get the default shortcuts for Quick Launch
back.

It was locked but I've unlocked it - makes no difference but I can now see
the start and end markers for the QL - two vertical rows of dots. I can grab
the right hand marker and move it to the right - but still have nothing in
the quick launch area.

I've created new shortcuts and put them in the quick launch folder - yes I
checked the path to make sure I've been looking in the right place. The new
ones show - for the time being. I need to recreate "show desktop" shortcut.
I'm sure I've seen that somewhere

Hey, thanks Brink. My show desktop icon & switch between window icon just
disappeared. I am going to try what you recommended; downloading shortcuts.
