If I choose not to install SP2, purely because I would like my system to
keep functioning, will I, at some point, be prevented from manually
downloading security/critical updates for newly discovered vulnerabilies?

Will patches continue to be made available for SP1 users?

Brushes

ps. MS clones, sensible answers only please, no PR guff

Your question should be submitted directly to Microsoft via E-mail since
this is a business decision by that corporation. It is not an appropriate
question, in my opinion, for a Newsgroup where answers are, in fact, just
[sometimes accurate] opinions which do not commit anybody to anything. You
choose what you believe [I believe it is called "Freedom"].

Hi

Lifecycle Supported Service Packs
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=lifesupsps

states that WinXP SP1 Pro will be fully supported for 2 years after
the release of SP2, and one year for WinXP SP1 Home.

This means you will get critical security updates for SP1 at least
up to August 2006 (and I would think that this would be relevant
for WinXP SP1 Home as well, as there is very little difference
between Pro and Home in this aspect).
