Quoting original text in WLM replies

I had to abandon my old email client (Turnpike) when I bought a computer
with Windows 7 so I decided to use Windows Live Mail. I find that when I
reply to emails or news the original message is not put in <quotes> of any
kind. This make it difficult for the recipient, especially if there is an
extended thread. Is it possible to configure WLM to put original text in
quotes or do I now have to change to Thunderbird. Any advice welcome

Hi, Denis.

Yes, that is the most-often-discussed flaw in WLM 2011. :>(

As explained here several times by ...winston, our resident WLM guru, when
the WLM developers were upgrading Windows Live Essentials from Wave 3 to
Wave 4, they saw the problem in WLM. But the fix would have taken too long
to fix before Wave 4 was due to be released. So, rather than hear
complaints from users about multiple problems, they took the short-cut
solution and deleted the quote-marking capability altogether. That was over
a year ago and we've been griping - here and elsewhere - about it ever
since.

We now have 3 options:

1. Abandon WLM and choose a third-party newsreader, such as Thunderbird.

2. Revert to an earlier version of WLM, such as WLM 2009 (aka Build 14x
or Wave 3). But that has its own drawbacks, such as that WLM 2009 isn't
supported with any Windows after WinXP. And that "you can't [revert] just
one"; since the Essentials are a matched set, if you revert Mail, you must
also revert Messenger and any other component of the Essentials that you
use.

3. Live with it. That is the option that I've chosen. I make manual
adjustments, such as adding ">" symbols, or copy'n'pasting quotes to make
them readable in my Replies. And I gripe, along with everyone else. But I
keep using WLM 2011 because its look and feel are familiar to those of us
who started with OE long ago.

I wish I had better advice, Denis. I REALLY do! :^[

I don't know why your having problem w/mail, however quoting is absent
for newsgroup posting. You're right... following an extended thread can
be confusing. FWIW I'm posting w/Tbird.

I see them when I'm reading posts and I'm using the latest version of WLM.
I'd read about people complaining about them not showing in the latest
version so couldn't understand why it was I do see them, this is on a
Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit machine.
It doesn't really bother me whether they show or not as I like WLM because I
can have all my emails, newsgroups and RSS Feeds in one place.

But when others read a reply from you, neither your post or the previous
post has the quote marks.

AFAIC, WLMail is not much better as an e-mail client than it is a
newsreader. For me, it just sucks.

So I'm reading this now and I have no idea who posted what... top post,
bottom post, inline post, no quote levels... so my reply marks all
previous posts as coming from one poster. WLM is fine for reading
groups, but unsuited for posting.

Joan top posted over Denis, so I just followed suit for that reply. FWIW,
I use TB for mail and Vista's Windows Mail in Win7 for news. TB is good
for news, but I prefer having a separate program for each.

My news client adds quotes. One set for each level. Above this line is the
first level, due to the fact that you top posted.

However, due to the fact that Windows Live Mail does not put older text from
prior articles in a quoted fashion, the entire article appears to have been
posted by Joan Archer. So all text following this line is also quoted to a
"first level"; though, properly speaking, in the Usenet, it *should* be a
second level quote (i.e. having '>>', not '>', preceding the lines.

What you are seeing is a failing of Windows Live Mail to properly quote
preceding articles. One work around is to manually edit replies.
Fortunately, my news client actually has a slick option which facilitates
such editing. Highlight all text which should have nested quotes, and cut
from the edit window. Then paste it back in, using the "Past as quote"
option. Since the reply already has one level of quotes, added by 40tude
dialog, the cut-and-paste job on the text which should have had nested
quotes will paste back in with a second level of quotes.

But readers should not have to jump through such hoops. So the best advice
that can be given is to not use Windows Live Mail for posting Usenet
articles.

You can also have all that with Thunderbird and it quotes properly.

In addition to RC's comments...

Or obtain a Hotmail type account (Live, Hotmail.com) or register your email
address as Live ID and use the Hotmail web UI to send/reply to mail (not
news) since the web ui is capable of inserting the quote marking character
'>' (see below example). Any Live ID registered email address is now
capable of being configured to send mail from the Hotmail web UI.

WLM's only option providing an indent specifier is by the use of
composition/reply in Html (Rich Text option)
