I have been told "no firewall service=no RDP" in Windows 2008. Does this
mean the windows firewall has to be turned on to enable RDP?

Also is the "Increase quotas" right still necessary local service to have
firewall enabled?

Thanks, Cindy

Hello Cindy,

Never heard about and used RDP without enabled firewall without problem.
Did you test it yourself or only heard a rumour?

Best regards

I am going through hardening server settings and service in 2003 had to be
enabled for Windows Firewall. At that time justification was 2008 will
require Windows firewall for RDP to be used....this person has been studying
for 2008 certification so I thought maybe he knew something.

Hello Cindy,

Even if you are required to enable the firewall to enable RDP, disable the
firewall afterwards and it works.

Hello Cindy,

I can connect with or without enabled firewall. Make sure you configure the
Remote desktop options under system properties.

We get the error when trying to allow RDP in system properties. I have seen
the screen shot. Thanks for you help but it doesn't seem to apply here. I
will try later to enable firewall and make settings and then see if rdp works
with firewall disabled.

I will also need to see if disabling "adjust memory for quotas" right needs
to be enabled for the firewall to work.

Thanks, Cindy

Hello Cindy,

Adjust memory for quotas is set for administrators, network service and local
service in my Default domain controllers policy. On my member server it works
without using this setting.

Cindy,

If you Disable the Firewall SERVICE, it essentially blocks all
connections - even Ping responses.

If you have the Firewall service Enabled, but set to "Off", it would not
block anything.

It's a nice idea that if the Firewall service crashed or whatever, that your
server is not un-protected, however it is then not accessible at all so kind
of a double edged sword

Hope this helps!
