Can you check if you have MS04-004 installed
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];838893)? You can
verify this by going to "Add/Remove program" in the control panel and seeing
if this update is listed.

Also can you send the windowsupdate.log (without spaces) from your %windir%
(usually c:\windows) directory, remove the online. from my email adress to
get my actual e-mail address so that you can send me the log)

Thanks,
Rajive Kumar

Am installing 3 brand spanking new XP Pro machines (two different makes)!
Ran Ad-Aware, no joy.
Tried suggestions in Knowledge Base Article
http://support.microsoft.com/default...5&Product=wupd -
didn't work.

If I un-install KB867801, I don't get the error and the Update site searches
for updates. But it informs me that there is 1 update to be installed ...
KB867801.

I'm not installing it until this problem has been sorted out.

These new machines with XP are likely on at XP Service Pack 1. Run WINVER to see which service pack they each have.

Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Look very closely at line that says: "Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to *clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be clear or un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

http://download.windowsupdate.com

Click OK.

If you have an XP system, change the v4 above to v5 .

You ought to plan on getting updated to Service Pack 2 (unless your new pc manufacturer is super-speedy & had SP2).

This sounds like a good call - it's going to be a day or two before I can try
it... but will let you know how it goes.

P.S. One more issue. IF you added a 3rd party firewall, say which product & version.
Lookup the users' manual, on-line help....etc....for that product. And add Microsoft sites to their "safe" (sometimes called exclusion or privacy) list. That issue has caused a bunch of time-out & failure to connect issues.

And if still no joy, list all programs you added to system.

Thanks for this post. I have been monitoring this issue for a week now since
it occurred on my laptop. Unchecked the "server verification" box. All is now
working.

Definately an good call!
