Microsoft Java Virtual Machine Transition Guide for IT Professionals, v2.2
Chapter 5: The MSJVM Removal Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/int.../msjvmp05.mspx

Remove all vestiges of the MSJVM with the above tool since this runtime
is no longer supported by MS.

Sorry I gave you incorrect information:

It would be better to remove all vestiges of the MSJMV since support for
it will end in just over one year.
Currently, Sun's JRE is available as a replacement -
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10

BUT, be VERY wary of Sun's auto updater. It leaves older versions behind
when a newer one is released. You'll have to manually uninstall them
from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
So what ? So, they are approximately about 115 MB in size.

And, it may not prompt you to install the most current version for
months after it's release even though there may be a Critical security
vulnerability with the version that is installed.

Now, if MS acted like Sun does ... it would make national news, be on
scores of blogs, and everyone would be flaming them.
I wonder why no one's flaming Sun for this pathetic "update mechanism" ?

Link to download the tool is obsolete...

You can try this page instead, for getting the removal tool:

Link is still working here, Martin. Not sure why you can't access that page.

Hello,

No problem, to access the page you mentioned:

but if you want to download the tool, you must go to chapter 5:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/int.../msjvmp05.mspx

And there is the link to download the tool:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

And when you click on this link, you get
"The download you requested is unavailable.
If you continue to see this message when trying to access this download, go
to the "Search for a Download" area on the Download Center home page. "

So it is not possible (at least clicking this way) to download the tool :-(

Regards,

Martin

Thanks for pointing that out, Martin. FWIW, the Tool can be downloaded
from the link on *Chapter 2*, but of course even after going there it
requires 2 more clicks ... so, this link is the one that *works* -

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Now I am suddenly getting this erroneous error.

The diagnostic says that I don't have VM installed, and I have the
latest Java installed.

The update 816093 says that I need to update VM, yet it's not installed.

I UNINSTALLED Jave and reinstalled with latest version.

I still get the error messages about update only being able to update
previously installed versions of VM.

What a ClusterF*!!

These two companies have GOT to work it out over these trivial little
applets that waste my time (and don't really do enough to warrant the
aggrevation)!

How (or should) I upgrade for 'security purposes', or leave the update
turned off (like I do now)?

I've read all the earlier threads and still haven't found any real
resoulution!

Any other recommendations?

Thanks,

Greg
