No easy solution for battery drainage while out of cellular range. Your
device will continue to ping for a server while out of range regardless of
time settings on the push schedule. Best bet is to turn off email feature
during out of range issue, but I understand that is not so reasonable at
times. Not the answer you wanted to hear, but it is a problem with
activesync devices that lose cellular/broadband connection for extended
periods of time.
My Treo exhibits the same behavior in rural areas of the US or offshore and
it is frustrating. I just keep the device plugged into a power source and
ignore the battery grind.
