Actually when animation is turned on the two monitors on the icon
alternately flash to show that traffic is passing between your pc and the
internet. The same thing happened in Windows Xp etc. However, there is a
small caveat in that it doesn't always work as it should, especially if you
have virtualisation software, such as VMWare installed.

I had VMware installed on my old machine running Vista Ultimate and the
animation never worked - that is until I uninstalled VMware. However, on my
new machine, again running Vista Ultimate the animation works regardless of
whether VMware is installed or not.

terrific answer. thanks.
I don't know what VMware is but it isn't listed in Programs, nor do i see
anything resembling that in Task Manager. It's no big deal, we'll just add
it to the list of Vista boners.

VMware is not part of Vista, mataeux. It is actually virtual machine
software which enables users to run two or more operating systems on one
system without having to dual boot. I use it to beta test other operating
systems. This allows me to keep my own vista operating system clean.

VMware is somewhat expensive and not something the average user would be
using anyway, so there is no need to look any further.
