Hi Maya,

From Explorer, choose Organize|Layout and enable Search Pane. On the far right of
the bar is a button for Advanced Search.

The "Location" field is empty for most files (perhaps for images only?). What you
probably want is either "Path" or "Folder". Right-click on a header and choose
"More" to see the Choose Details dialog for adding or removing columns. Uncheck
Location and choose Path and/or Folder from the list.

Yep, Explorer doesn't always save layout changes as one would expect. That's a known
problem. The easiest way around it is to get in the habit of pressing Win Key + F to
bring up search. That window always has the Advanced Search button on the far right.
Click it, then use the Location drop-down list to pick your folder.

You're welcome!

Thank you all for your insight.

But this is WAY too stupid. Who was thinking what when "they" decided to
improve search by putting it everywhere without being useful.

XP: right click a folder and click search, click search and all files in the
folder and subfolders were displayed to be sorted as required.

Now: windows-f, click advanced, navigate to folder,... stupid. Way too Mac
for me.

I keep trying to use Vista's improved interface stuff but repeatedly I (we)
am disappointed.

Also I hate having the search box everywhere. I subscribe to Charles Hobbs'
approach to clutter. When something is not to be used soon, it should be
hidden.

So now I have a bit worthless clutter in exploerer, outlook, IE,...that
cannot be removed. Stupid!

Why do I/we use Vista? Because we create custom software and we need to know
how to use our client's computers. Most of which are still using
out-of-the-box defaults. We attempt to instruct but,...

And I keep hoping an update will fix this and other such mistakes: ie: lack
of hardware profiles.

For ourselves we to use PowerDesk (Avanquest) for file management and
searching. Intelligent.
