My laptops don't seem to like Ubuntu x windows configurations, or
many other linux configuartions for that matter. Until the drivers
for graphics are sorted out properly, many will not jump ship.

Funny, Fedora 8 and SUSE Enterprise both loaded right off the top. I use a
GeForce 8500 GT and 512M RAM. Works right off with Linux or Vista.

What GPU chipset are you using?

Ubuntu is quite poor since the 7.10 release.. stuff that did work no longer
does and you have to hack it to work.. IME this is all the Intel 845 chipset
laptops I have (two Sony, two Fujitsu).. it may work on other chipsets but
it is a pain.
Other linux distos have different drives so YMMV.
