Colt,
You will see AU tray icon if there is updates applicable to your
machine. If you do not see AU tray icon, most probably AU find no
applicable updates. Or AU is not actively downloading it because of
transient connection issue or server regulation. You can tell how many
updates are applicable to your machine by opening up
%windir%\windowsupdate.log and search for "found ... updates" where
"..." is a number.
