I subtracted two and added one newsgroup to the cross-post.
Although WinHlp32.exe hasn't yet been made available by Microsoft for Vista,
Shareware HelpExplorer_Win32 3.0 will install and open "HLP" files on Vista.
It's $30 after 30 days, in case there's still no WinHlp32.exe after January
31st:

Correct. Edlin is still there if you know about it, so why not HLP.
I suppose unsupported when WinHlp32.exe becomes available:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607
It isn't available yet. In the meantime, there's HelpExplorer_Win32
for those who insist on HLP and are waiting for WinHlp32.exe.
My apologies for *not* top posting my first response.

Colin,

Not to attack you personally, but you should've following original thread
posting order. It was bottom-post and you created a mess by
top-post-replying to it. It is really a pain to follow a thread that has a
mix of top- and bottom-posts.

For anyone concerned - it is quite easy to fix the mess if you catch first
reply in wrong order - just move it up/down when you reply to the thread.

It's pretty obvious - to discourage its continued use.

Me, too. Top post/bottom post ... as long as the information is correct,
who gives a fig ?

I'd still like to know why this was posted to windowsupdate since it has
nothing to do with updating. Perhaps I'll crosspost it to Windows 3.1 to
find out.

I do both ways and am quite comfortable with both. My concern was mixing
top- and bottom-posting in same conversation. Just take a look at mess
below.

"its" is not a clear reference: at first I thought you meant Edlin, and
laughed in agreement. Using it generally discourages its continued use.

Like HLP has been taken out of Vista, Edlin was taken out of DOS,
but enough Edlin users seem to exist for it to return in XP and its also
in Vista, after enduring a banishment of about ten years. Try it!

"Edlin was taken out of DOS" ?? Maybe you meant some version of DOS based
Windows, like Win95?

I remember using that on my dad's 286. It made absolutely no sense to me at
all. I had an Amiga those days, which was a vastly better computer.

I didn't know it was still in XP, but I did know that progman.exe is.
