I am sorry that you are encountering this issue on one of those three laptops.
I am confused by part of your statement. You said:

Did you mean, in that last sentence, that it "Boots normally when NOT plugged
into replicator?"
As to the error you are seeing, please try to use a restore point and then add
the updates one at a time. Here's how (for these instructions, do not use the
port replicator):
1. Print out these instructions, as you will be rebooting this machine.
2. Close all programs after saving any open documents.
3. Click Start
4. Click Shut Down
5. Choose Restart
6. Watch the machine eventually power off.
7. As the machine starts to power on again, press F8 every 1 second or so to
enter a menu.
8. In this menu, use the up and down arrows to move to "Safe Mode."
9. Log into the local Administrator account.
10. Click Start
11. Click Run
12. Type: msconfig <Enter>
13. When the System Configuration Utility opens, click the General tab.
14. Click the "Launch System Restore" button. This will open a wizard.
15. On the calendar in the wizard, select a date before you installed the
updates.
16. Click OK through the wizard and confirm you wish to reboot. This should
bring you back to a working and stable Windows XP.
17. Return to the Windows Update website and try just one update at a time,
installing and rebooting as required--and let us know if you run into trouble
here.
As for Windows Explorer not functioning, try this:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: cmd <Enter>
4. In the Command Prompt, type: notepad wuexp.cmd <Enter>
5. Confirm that you wish to create a new file.
6. In the newly opened notepad, copy and paste the following text between the
dotted lines:
