Just to make sure, is "Show Updates" enabled in Add/Remove Programs [e.g.,
KB896424 would show as 'Security Update for Windows XP (KB896424)'] ?

Are you behind a proxy at work? See the sections 'Step 6: Remove the proxy
server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration' and 'Method 2: Corporate
users or users who are behind a proxy server' of
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941.

Really, truly, you'd be much better off posting about this in the Windows
Update-specific newsgroup (microsoft.public.windowsupdate), so I'm
crossposting this reply to it. Please continue the crossposting in your
replies.
