Thanks Maurice - I'm unable to see the failed installation in "Review your
update history" - the last one that can be seen was April last year and I've
attempted to use Windows Updates several times since but with little luck.
Initially the problem came up on MS Update but so went back to Windows Update
but problem persisted.

I tried to follow what you suggested and got a bit lost - looked at How to
read Windows update log.file but the summary/intro links were blank and the
rest looks too daunting for words.

You have to be persistent. Keep looking at the log -- the entries for the
most recent date --- which should be near / at the end of the file.

If you have Internet Explorer version 6:
Place sites into Exceptions list (to get around Pop-up blocking):
Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Popup Blocker>Pop-up Blocker settings

In block titled "Address of Web site to allow" type in
update.microsoft.com , then click Add.
Repeat for windowsupdate.microsoft.com

then press Close.

Go back to Windows Update & just Review history.
Click on the Red X where install failure is noted.
See if that makes the difference.
