Seems to me that the browser is not really the culprit here.
Things I would look at:
1) Internet provider timeouts/disconnects
2) Modem quirks
3) Ethernet card and drivers

Probably starting from the bottom. Have you checked the system logs for
errors? Are you using a router?

It's greek to me too, but I would only consider this a possible clue if
you found an entry
for every time you were disconnected or locked. What log was this in?

If you right-click on "my Computer" then left click on "Manage" should
open the Management applet with logs for application, system, security
etc... You should be able to filter by severity, leaving for example
error and warnings only (red and yellow icons).

Also could be worth trying to remove the router and see if you have the
same lockup. Do you still have that old machine the laptop replaced?
What Internet service are you using?
