Hi, Allendick.

I'm breaking my rule never to send an email response to a newsgroup post -
because the breach of netiquette is required in this case.

We DID see your prior post, Subject: "Windows Live Mail could not be
started", posted on 11/10/09. You got at least TWO replies. And we saw
your followup complaint that nobody had replied - and you got at least one
reply to that.

So that's why I'm both replying to the newsgroup AND sending an email to
quote Peter.R's message to you on 11/11 - which he repeated today, 11/12/09:

<paste>
It would appear that the WLMail Message Store has become corrupted.

I suggest that you try replacing the WLMail Message Store as follows:

Rename the WLMail Message Store* by adding "(old)" to the name.
Then restart WLMail
The Message Store is recreated at this point, and WLMail should start
properly
Then import or recreate your accounts**
Then import your messages from the old Message Store***

*WLMail's Message Store is a directory named 'Windows Live Mail'. The path
to the Message Store, in its default location involves a hidden folder, so
ensure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked under Folder Options
in Windows Explorer. To find the location of your message store, go to
Tools->Options...->Advanced [tab]->Maintenance->Store Folder.

The default Message Store locations are:

Vista & 7:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

XP:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail
(C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail)

**If you do not have backup exports of your e-mail accounts, and cannot
start WLMail to create them (and for some reason would prefer not to
recreate them), you can manually install them into the WLMail Message Store
as follows:

An account can be created in WLMail by placing an .oeaccount file (copied
from the old Message Store account sub-folder) directly within the Root of
the newly created WLMail Message Store*.

When restarted, WLMail will create the folder structure for that account and
place the .oeaccount file within that folder structure, and the account will
appear in WLMail. All old e-mail accounts can be reinstalled at the same
time using this method.

All messages in the server's Inbox may be re-downloaded.

Whilst the same can be done with News accounts, a bug may be introduced into
News Rules, so I don't recommend it (although there is a workaround).

***Messages can be imported directly from your old renamed Message Store by
dragging them onto the WLMail interface, or by using the
File->Import->Messages...->Windows Live Mail option and pointing it to your
old renamed Message Store folder.

BTW, a belated thanks for the reply.

Your comments helped me to fix the problem with very little difficulty.

I had to do a bit of dragging and dropping after the import, but all is
well.

Odd that this is not easy to find on the Microsoft support site.

Again, Thanks.

Hi, Allen.

I'm glad WLM is working right for you now. Thanks for the feedback.
