you can download BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP directly from Microsoft.

I had the same problem and got it installed this way

But now, I if I get WU menus and list of upgrades to be installed ... I
still can download any of them/ Error code is similar :-(

Error Code: 8024402C

Hi

Give the resolutions at
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=26&ln=en a
try and see if that fixes the problem.
If not, please send %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

The service pack KB842773 downloads alright but fails to install. I have
tried every solution suggested here and on other newsgroups and none has
worked so far. This is getting old. It is high time Microsoft acknowledged
that this is a software problem, not the computer and certainly not the fault
of the user. Please give us the solution in plain simple language, not the
gibberish or jargons that the so-called experts here throw out to us the
unsophisticated. Boy, I am really regretting not buying apple computer. My
friends who have it don't have these kinds of problem

I too was having the same issue. It must be a proxy/firewall
configuration because I removed my machine from my network and plugged
into my DSL and it worked like a champ.

After downloading the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
2.0 and
WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773) on the DSL I plugged back into my reqular
network(i.e. behind the firewall/proxy) and the rest of the updates
were available to me. Not sure what changed on the Update site but the
BITS does not work well w/ firewalls.
