This may be the answer. It worked for me.

Open services in Administrative tools. Make sure that Automatic updates
service is set to automatic and has started. Background Intelligent transfer
service also needs to be enabled , be set to automatic and be running. Now
try Windows Update again.

Richard:

That's fine ONLY if you want to run BITS and automatic
updates... I don't have it running and don't want it
running. So, for folks like myself that fix won't work,
but thanks anyway.

Graham,

That is what I originally thought. I was wrong because you can have
automatic updates disabled in the security centre and have the services
enabled. Set up this way you can visit the update site and choose what you
want to download and install.

To put it another way you need to have the BITS and automatic updates
together with cryptographic services and event log to be running. You can
then download the updates manually or automatically. You set your preference
in the Security Centre.

I hope this is clear now.

Richard.

In my case also the following program was causing some difficulty:
inetinfo.exe
Now that I don't run this anymore, (and have done the same as richard)
everything is going fine!

My Cryptographic services, BITS and Event log service are running and set to
automatic as you suggested. But I still cannot install any update from the
windows update website (including high priority updates and SP2).

I have the same problem. When I updated the update
software the page searches then displays the following
message:

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot
display the requested page. You may find the following
resources helpful in resolving the problem:

What is the fix for this problem?

Hi

The steps below may help, or they may not...

In Control Panel/Automatic Updates, turn AU off if it is on, do a
reboot, and then turn AU on again and see if that helps.

If that doesn't help (or AU was off), try this:

Clean out the Download folder (WU5's temporary download folder)
located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the EventCache folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

If the problem repeat itself still, try the steps here as well:
