Eric,
As others have said, it is not obvious what the problem is. You don't need
to install anything. \\server\c$ will pop up the contents of the c: drive,
assuming the server is actually running.
If the server is not starting, you can still recover stuff from the drive,
but before we go into that let's see what the problem is.
Can you run Computer | right-click Manage and select the server to see the
event log?
