Greetings Carling,
There are number of issues in Windows Live Messenger 8.0 regarding this, if you're not using
the latest version of Windows Live Messenger, I'd upgrade to 8.1 before actually doing
anything more drastic:

You can check what version you're using by clicking the Help menu (or pressing Alt-H on the
keyboard if the menu is hidden), and then click About.
