When did you install WinXP SP3? Did you install it via Windows Update or
manually? Were ZA firewall, NAV, Ad-Aware's Guard service, and Spybot Tea
Timer all running in the background when you installed SP3?

Have you been able to successfully install any other updates since you
installed WinXP SP3?

Was IE7 installed before or after you installed WinXP SP3?

WinXP came installed on the machine (an IBM NetVista). SP3 was installed
through the automatic updating service. I manually installed IE7, ZA Pro
firewall, NAV and Spybot (whose Tea Timer runs in the background). These
were all installed and running when SP3 was installed (quite some time ago).
Ad-Aware's Guard service does not run in the background, as I am using
Ad-Aware free. So, Ad-Aware runs only when I initiate a spyware scan.

Ad-Aware 2007/2008 (free) includes the Guard service which *does* run in the
background at all times unless you've disabled it. Ad-Aware's Guard service
*and* Spybot Tea Timer will disallow many, if not most, changes that an
update or Service Pack will make to the system.

As such, Ad-Aware's Guard service, Spybot Tea Timer, and NAV all should have
been disabled before you installed SP3. I would also have recommended that
you disable ZA firewall and then enable the Windows Firewall before
installing SP3.

oThank you, PA Bear. I'm not sure what you have in mind by other updates
since SP3. I occasionally manually go to Windows Update and do a scan to see
whether I have missed any critical updates. The only one that has come up
lately has been the Cumulative Security Update to IE7 (KB950759). Yet
Automatic Updates reports that the KB950759 update has been successfully
installed (every time I start the computer). It's as if the update installs,
but does not survive computer shut-down, so must be reinstalled upon restart.
I'll try turning off ZA Pro, NAV, Ad-Aware Guard and Tea Timer, then
reinstalling SP3 with only Windows Firewall running.

When (date) did you install WinXP SP3?

Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com & open Update History: Were any
(other) updates installed (successfully or otherwise) after you'd installed
WinXP SP3?

I ask because you may have a "horked" install of SP3 and it may be why
KB950759 fails to install.
