I'm not sure what you have done? Have you installed 'Active Desktop'?
Are you looking at a folder view of the C drive on the desktop? Is it
clickable or is it a picture? Did you copy the C drive to your Desktop
folder? What do you see when you open Explorer and key into the
address: %USERPROFILE%\Desktop ?

I don't think there is any Active Desktop in Vista.

In what way is it causing a problem? What is going wrong because of it?
Does the icon have the shortcut arrow on it?

Correct. Active Desktop is not included in Vista from Microsoft,
however there are several people who have built Active Desktop

Dan,

Do you think it might be possible that some 3rd party "Active Desktop" type
software is installed?
I am sure it might help to check the installed programs from Control Panel

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with 3rd party applications. It
happened after i rebooted it, and i actually managed to reproduce it with
another computer which i dualbooted with, so I'm pretty sure its to do with
that.

I've checked my Programs list just to make sure, and there's nothing there
worth noting. I've not had this installed for very long so its not like i've
installed lots of applications.

The only applications I have that might interfere with the shell are the
Nvidia Display panel (which has no configuration for desktop as far as I
know), and TortoiseSVN, which doesn't relate to desktop configuration at all.

It's also worth noting the computer which I reproduced on had neither of
these programs, and was a fresh Vista computer that I chose to install XP on.
The computer was an Acer Desktop which came with Vista, which I found to be
too slow for my liking with the specs on that computer. I went on to install
Windows XP as an alternative and setup a dualboot. I then noticed that I got
the same issue as I have now. That computer was literally barebones and I
had MS Office installed only, along with the applications that come with Acer
Desktops.

%USERPROFILE%\Desktop brings up my real desktop directory, with all the
contents that should be displayed, not drive C:

Look in %USERPROFILE%\mzgpky\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Win dows\Desktop

Do you see anything in there? Maybe a shortcut or something? If you
do, restart in safe mode and delete it.

I'm thinking of another chain to follow up on that deals with folder
redirection. Folder redirection like your desktop has been redirected
to the C drive. It is something to investigate, which I haven't done
yet but will let you know if I find anything.

Hi, thanks for the response.

I assume you made a typo in your post, and that "mzgpky" refers to your user
on your computer. I tried the following path:

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\De sktop

Apparently it does not exist. I navigated to the "Windows" directory, but I
did not see a "Desktop" directory there. I see the following:
* Network Shortcuts
* Printer Shortcuts
* Recent Items
* SendTo
* Start Menu
* Templates
* Themes

Perhaps the fact that "Desktop" is missing, is causing the problem? If so
I'll proceed to try and create my own and see where that leads me.
