I would try going into C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local
and deleting IconCache.db
then rebooting.

It's a hidden file in a hidden folder, so you'll have to unhide them first:

Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Folder Options
Select the VIEW tab and check SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS.

Does that fix it?

I'm guessing here, but the fact that you updated the video driver gave me an
idea.
Does changing the desktop resolution, then changing it back fix it?

Not!

BTW - I'm having my own Nvidia problem right now: a fan that's driving me
crazy.
I'm about to order a fanless video card for the sake of my sanity.
