If you drag back to the beginning of the selection it will go character by
character from then.

Thanks for your replies guys. Had kinda hoped it was a simple setting in the
windows registry. Thought it was something you could learn to live with but
especially the last two years its been annoying me more and more instead.

Yes the start of the highlight will stick and it will work fine for the
current word, but as soon as you get to the next word it autoselect the
entire word instead of just the first character.

I think what . meant was to highlight from the right-hand end towards the
left hand end. From your reply, I get the feeling you didn't do that...

From my experience, I also agree with Bruce Chambers that it's application
dependent - you just happen not to have the other kind of apps.

See the site:

http://www.microsoft.com/enable/trai...retbrowse.aspx

It's keyboard, not mouse, but works very good.

I have no idea who you meant to reply to, but it shows up under my post
and references my post, but fails to quote my post or to be of any
interest to me, since I have, in the last nearly six months, forgotten
what this thread was about.

Actually, I'm wrong - my post is quoted below. It's at the bottom, but
the posts here seem to be quoted in reverse order from the normal, i.e.
the oldest posts have the fewest ">" marks. It is true that the only
post listed in the references header is mine.

t w's headers are confusing, but if I read them correctly, the host is
eggheadcafe.com, which seems to be b0rken, judging by the mess below.
