Start by reading your logs. This is what they are there for. When an
update fails, the entity performing that update (i.e. the DHCP client,
or the DHCP server, or the NETLOGON service) will log the failure. The
DNS server may well log some information, too.

just for my interest - what tread is this and what was the inital problem ?

It was multi-posted to this and other newsgroups. You should be able to
see one of the multi-posts here. I cross-posted in response to one of
the other multi-posts.

Oh, so your cross-post did it. I realized that last night when I also found
this thread in the AD group. Don't you just like multiposting? It's so hard
for an original poster to keep up and find all threads, where if it was
*cross-posted* all he would have to do is only check one of them.

I did the reverse. I found that post there first, replied with a
cross-post (DNS topic, therefore move to the DNS newsgroup.), and then
found the multi-posting (right alongside the question from M. RCan, as a
matter of fact). (-:
