If you type a name into the 'Nickname:' field, that will be displayed as your 'display name' in Windows Live Mail, otherwise it will be the First and Last names from your 'Business Card' that are displayed.

Thanks to Microsoft, which did not learn anything from the confusion they
caused by naming to distinctly different products with similar names (MS
Outlook and MS Outlook Express), you have been confused by the similarity of
the names, "Windows Live Hotmail" (a web mail service, replacing MSN
Hotmail) and, "Windows Live Mail" (a desktop email client).

The instructions that you have been given, to date, apply to "Windows Live
Mail" (the desktop email client), not "Windows Live Hotmail (the MSN Hotmail
replacement).

Your NNTP posting headers tell me that you are using the web access to these
groups; probably through MS Internet Explorer 7:

| X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000

So now we, the helpers, are confused. You are, as Peter states, posting to a
group focused on Windows Live Mail (the desktop client). When I check one of
my Windows Live Hotmail accounts, it doesn't have a display image, except on
the sign-on screen. That image does not match the one selected for that
account within Windows Live Messenger. From the Windows Live Hotmail (the
web mail service, not the desktop client), when I click on "Options", I get
a list of links. Four groups:

Manage your account
Junk e-mail
Customize your mail
Customize your contacts

When I click the "View and edit your personal information" link, I see a
generic display picture, not the one I had selected in the Windows Live
Messenger client.

Down the left column is another list of links. While in the "Account
summary" view, I see no way to edit the display picture. However, when I
click on the "Profiles" link, there is a "Windows Live Shared profile", with
a "Display picture", and a "Profile picture"; both of which are, currently,
generic.

Within the "Windows Live Shared profile" group is a link labeled, "Edit your
shared profile". Using that link, I was able to change the "Profile
Picture".

Okay, there it is! I have a yellow box at the top of the screen, when I
click on the "Edit shared profile" link. When I click on the "Create your
space" button in that box, I am taken to a screen with the generic "Display
Picture". When I edit the profile information in this screen, I can pick a
new picture.

Well, I just did that by poking around the menus, and choosing likely
looking names. Be an adventurer; explore a little!

P.S. I cross posted this to the 'microsoft.public.windows.live.messenger'
group. I don't use the web access to these groups, so I don't know how to
navigate to that group, or find the web link. I just plugged "windows live
messenger" into the "Search For:" box at the top of the page in MSIE7,
looking at the MSFT "Communities" page, and it took me there.

In WindowsLive mail make sure all menus are displayed by clicking on the Show Menu (alt-M) button and selecting Show All Menus. Next select Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties and under Name put what you want displayed. That's it.
