Greetings,

Messenger cannot be turned off using MSConfig. In fact, don't use MSConfig to turn anything
off in this manner, you should be using the Autoruns utility instead:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb963902.aspx

Although that will work, you can also do it the official way in Messenger itself.
Unfortunately it has changed several times depending on what version of Messenger you're
using, so I'll mention them all.

Windows Messenger
This is the version that comes with Windows XP. Just open it up by double-clicking on the
icon in the notification area (by the clock), choose the Tools menu, then Options, then the
Preferences tab, and uncheck 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts'.

MSN Messenger
Open up Live Messenger by double-click on the icon in the notification area (by the clock),
press the Alt key on the keyboard to make the menu bar appear, then choose the Tools menu,
then Options, choose the General category on the left and uncheck 'Automatically run
Messenger when I log on to Windows'.

Windows Live Messenger
Open up Live Messenger by double-click on the icon in the notification area (by the clock),
press the Alt key on the keyboard to make the menu bar appear, then choose the Tools menu,
then Options, choose the Sign In or General category on the left (depending on what version
of Live Messenger) and uncheck 'Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to
Windows'.
