You're out of luck. Vista won't be generally available until January and
will cost well over $100.00. You could try eBay and get Win 98 or XP
cheaper.

The version you have now was a test version only. The testing period is over so
you can't get a new key.

The version you received was installed as piracy. If you paid for this
system, you can legally file a formal complaint with your local authorities
to the guy who sold it to you.

With that said, keys are generally available to people who have them now.
Beta testers and MSDN all have keys--legally, and now.

Unless you were/are involved with either of these programs, you will have to
wait until January 30th.

Vista is not available to the general public, so why would they provide
keys?
Any copy the GP has is either a beta, an RC, or pirated, that includes your
copy.
The only person to blame here is you, for making assumptions and leaping
before you looked.

Basically, you got scammed.

You bought something you thought was good and the guy didn't have a valid
operating system on the computer. He installed a either a beta, RC or RTM
version of Vista without a key. The operating system is N/G without a key.

It is between you and the seller.

You other recourse is to buy the operating system on January 30th.

Well ... you can purchase an MSDN subscription that includes all of the OS
images. But you're carping about $100, so I can imagiine the ring-tailed
hissy you will throw for $900. Your first place to start is to go back to
the seller. That's where the scam started, and where your solution is ...
either the key or your money back or legal action started.

I absolutely agree. You should take this up at once with the person who sold
you a system with a pirated copy of Vista that wasn't even hacked and
pirated properly. I think Microsoft are not going to be overly heartbroken
to hear that 'stolen' goods are not working too well, I'm afraid to say.

Not with a correctly installed, legal, copy. Or come to that, with a
correctly pirated copy either. That's what is so sad about this. You've been
ripped off with *badly* pirated goods. Sorry to be so blunt but there really
isn't much else to say about this and I'd just waste your time if I tried to
sugarcoat it.

AFAIK if you do not enter a version unique key at the time of Vista
installation you get to pick which version you want to install and then you
have 30 days to obtain and install a key for that version. This is probably
what was done by the seller.
The problem is probably bad for the OP since I doubt that you can purchase a
key over the internet until Jan 30th even if you wanted to.

oh, this is cool. Nevermind, someone send me a patch that resets it to 30
days. Yay, so now i can just use that till it gets relased and then buy an
upgrade key.
