I have 1 pioneer DVD Writer and 1 Sony DVD Rom installed on Windows Vista
Ultimate on a fresh install. The Motherboard is an Abit IC7 Max 3. My
problem being that the Bios see both DVD drives on the Secondary Ribbon
i.e. Master and Slave and when the Windows Vista installation is complete
both drives are visible to Vista but when I reboot the system and Vista
restarts then Vista always loses 1 of the DVD drives and only shows 1
installed. If I go to device manager and scan for hardware changes then the
lost drive reappears but again as soon as the computer is rebooted then
Windows Vista loses it again. Any thoughts on this problem.

Thanks Martyn.

I have similar problem.

Installed Vista Ultimate & now Cd & DVD drives appear in Device Manager but don't show in My computer. Can't get to them.

Updating driver in Device Manager says Windows has latest driver installed??

Tried a new DVD with a Vista compatible driver & still as above. Not accessible.

I now install new programs from drives in another PC which I access via network. Not very practicle.

I have exactly the same problem as you do!
What I did back then was change the jumper settings to Cable Select for both
drives (before I had Master / Slave Jumper). This did the trick, but then
after a month I had the same problem again, even with System Restore I
couldn't get it to work. I have no clue what to do now.
