You cannot download updates when you access the Windows Update Web site from a
Windows XP-based computer that is behind a firewall or a proxy server

| Some of the windows update seem to fail consistently, and some passed but
| after a couple of attempts. All failed ones consitently failed with error
| 0x80244018
|
| Failed updates --
| 1) MSXML 4.0 sp2 security update - KB927978
| 2) Cummulative security update for Internet Explorer for XP - KB925454
| 3) Cummulative security update for Outlook Express for XP - KB923694
| 4) Windows Media Player 11
|
| I'm unselecting the update of IE7, due to the fact that this whole problem
| began by installing about 6 weeks ago.
|
| Succeeded updates are --
| 1) Windows malicious software removal Tool - Dec'06 - KB890830
| 2) Security update for XP - KB923689
| 3) Security update for XP - KB926255
| 4) Update for XP - KB928388
| 5) Update for XP - KB929120
| 6) Update for XP - KB920342
| 7) Security update for windows media player 6.4 - KB925398
| 8) Windows Rights management services client with sp2 - KB925876
| 9) Remote desktop communication (Terminal Services client 6.0) -KB917275
|
| Also, even thugh I use wifi network of Public Library (reliable since it is
| free from any "commercials") my downloading keeps giving authentication
| prompt, i.e. password even for free downloads.
|
| I used have autoupdate working beutifully without any problems untill when I
| went to IE7. Now, even when switch to IE6 the problem continues.
|
| I feel updates are very crucial for getting any fixes and keep system
| healthy and be able to download stuff from the internet, so, please help me
| to fix this problem, as I don't see any solutions posted.
|
| I've aready tried --
|
| 1) tools->Diagnose connection problems
| which produces 12031 error for ftp connection.
| I think this may be also related to the autoupdate problem, when I'm
| watching the updates download, it stops as the download/connection fails.
|
| 2) I already ran the cmd -- sfc /scannow, twice, but no difference
|
| Thanks in advance for the help,
|
|

But, that is not the case, as I'm connecting the laptop by wifi, which
doesn't require any proxy server. right? Besides, this error (0x80244018) is
somehow due to corruption due to going to IE7 and then back.

Also, as I see the (tools->Diagnose Connection Problems) gives the error
12031, as the following complete msg log of the error --

Last diagnostic run time: 12/18/06 19:26:43 Network Adapter Diagnostic
Network location detection
===
info Using home Internet connection
info Redirecting user to support call

HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity

warn FTP (Passive): Error 12031 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: The
connection with the server was reset
info HTTP: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com.
info HTTPS: Successfully connected to www.passport.net.
warn FTP (Active): Error 12031 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: The
connection with the server was reset
error Could not make an FTP connection.
===

So, please help me to fix this error.
