Hi,
I have seen this issue where the automatic updates service or the BITS
service fails to start.
Check the following key to determine where the system is looking for the
wuauserv.dll...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv\Parameters\Ser
viceDll=<path to wuauserv.dll>

Then check to see if the wuauserv.dll is indeed in that location.
If the file is missing, you can copy from a good machine.

Also check in the registry if the following keys exist...
These keys allows the AU and BITS services to run under Svchost:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost\BITSGroup
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost\wugroup

If these keys are missing, export the Svchost parent key from a good
machine and applied it to the bad
one: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost

Please let me know if this helps

Thanks,

The error that I am getting is: 0x8007043B whenever I try to do either the
Express scan or the Custom Scan for updates. The computer I am trying to
update is Win XP. I am reading quite a few messages with same problems.
Please contact me with any resolution or work arounds! THANKS!

Greg,

This helps the IT system adminsitrators who are managing multiple users, but
it's doesn't do much for us poor slobs at home working with only one machine.

It doesn't look like I have these keys:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost\BITSGroup
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost\wugroup

And I don't have a good machine from which to copy. What now?

What you can do is manually create the key...
Create a text file which contains the following information "you can cut
and past from between the dotted lines"
Being careful not top copy any of the dotted lines... copy and paste the
below text to a text file.
Save the file as "Bitsgroup.reg"
Note that there is a blank line at the bottom of the file

.................................................. ..........................
.................................................. ..........................
.................................................. ........
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost\BITSGroup]
"DefaultRpcStackSize"=dword:00000008

.................................................. ..........................
.................................................. ..........................
.................................................. ........

Doubleclick the Bitsgroup.reg file to apply it to your registry...

If you are still having problems, please email me direct at
and I can send you a reg file that will create the
values
