Had you just installed SP2 when the crash occurred?

How did you go about the reinstall (e.g., from Recovery Console; format &
reinstall; via steps outlined in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 )?

Did the slipstreamed disk include SP2?

The system performed normally for appox. 8 months. All updates including SP2
were complete.

I did a complete reinstall using a slipstreamed XP with SP2. I should point
out that I did not erase or reformat the hard drive. I could not boot into
safe mode. Unfortunately I didn't know enough about recovery console to try
to fix the problem with the console.
