Do you mean that the update is detected as needed but will not download to the
server or that it is neither detected as needed or downloaded.

There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.

Had you included this level of detail in the email you sent me a couple of
days ago, I could have answered you a couple of days ago.

This is caused because the firewall and/or proxy server between the WSUS
Server and the Internet is not properly configured to support the HTTP v1.1
protocol -- specifically the use of Range Protocol Headers -- which is
required in order to successfully download files from microsoft.com.

You've likely only now encountered this on XP SP3, because it's a
multi-megabyte package, and all previous updates were small enough that you
did not need the facilities of RPH to support the download.

What appliances/software do you have installed as your firewall and/or proxy
server?

Okay.. firewall.. ASDL router... whatever -- the point is that the *device*
which connects your LAN to the Internet is not compliant.

It may be a configuration issue; it may be a firmware issue.

How would one test the use/functionality of http v 1.1 and RHP? I'm having an
issue where the files are not downloading onto the external WSUS. i retry
download but it fails to update.

The first thing you do is start your own thread.. rather than posting into
one that's been dead for almost three months.

The second thing you do is provide ALL of the background on YOUR specific
problem.

But, in general, there's not much to 'test'. Either the device supports it
or it doesn't. In most cases these days (such as SonicWall appliances) it's
because the product is shipped with incorrect configurations, and the
configuration needs to be changed.

In the case of Khalid's issue last May, a very explicit error message
identified the issue:
