On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed update (red
mark) and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the alternative, do a
search for the error code.

Also -
How to view the Update log in Windows

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type : %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy
and paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On
the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by
searching the Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

Thanks for your response. To answer your questions:

In the windowsupdate.log, the lines containing the error codes are as follows:

“2007-01-06 15:05:54 368 9f4 AU # WARNING: Install aborted, error =
0x8024000B
2007-01-06 15:05:54 5856 eac Handler : Install completed: result type =

reboot required = No

In the KB925454.log, the relevant error indicators seem to be:

“14.109: ref tag c:\windows\system32\sp4.cab does not exist

Do you need to see the whole files? How do I upload?

The update.ver file is not correct.
Try manually downloading the file for your OS
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...DisplayLang=en

Also remove WU downloads from the temporary folder:-

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

By deleting the contents of the Download folder - you have removed any downloaded
updates.

Hi TaurArian

Tried the manual download:

It didn't work. Error messages:

"KB925454 Setup could not backup registry key
HKLM\Software|Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_IMAGING_USE_A RT to file
C\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB925454$\reg0023. 5: Access is denied.

KB925454 Setup Error. Access is denied

KB925454 Setup Error. KB925454 installation did not complete.
Select ‘OK’ to undo the changes that have been made."

Software uninstall wizard ran.

Then:

"KB925454 Setup Error
KB925454 installation did not complete.
Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly."

The PC then re-booted itself.

I carried out the changes on the Automatic Updates and deleted the contents
of the download folder. I then tried the automatic installation (there's
still a notification that updates are available) and that failed to install
as well.

Anything else I can try?

Hi MickW, are you logged in as an Administrator? Do you have full permissions on the
key in question?

One of the most common causes of this error code is the Anti Virus and Anti Spyware
software programs running on the computer.
When manually trying to install, disconnect from the internet and adjust the above
programs so that they don't interfere with the installation process. Remember to turn
them back on before connecting to the internet.

If that isn't much help, you'll need to obtain assistance from MS Support
