Ron,
Suggest you show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp
Next, using Windows Explorer, navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution
Is there a ReportingEvents.log resident there ?
If yes, then open it and see if there are any entries.
The log shows all updates that were successfully installed.
IF the log shows updates have been installed then, in effect, this is a
Repair Installation of XP.
You would then need to delete the contents of the following subfolders:
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache
IF there is no or an empty copy of ReportingEvents.log, then this was a
clean installation of XP. You do not need to deal with any of the above.
Install SP2 after reading this:
Preparing for installation
http://winhlp.com/WxSP2.htm#Preparing_for_installation
After the required restart, use the dial up connection to access the
Windows Update site and update the software components required to
update XP.
Whether you then use WU or Automatic Updates to install the updates
published after SP2 came out is up to you.
If possible, highly recommend that you connect the system to a broadband
connection as there are quite a number of updates.
NOTE: If you find this was a Repair installation then you will have to
register one .dll file after first visiting the WU site and updating the
software components. Go to Start > Run > type in
cmd
Click OK or press Enter
At the Command Prompt type in the following, pressing Enter after each:
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
exit
Restart the system
