OK, thanks. I haven't used command-line FTP in years, so I had forgotten
that.

I use Fire-FTP, an add-in to Firefox, so I don't have to think any more :-)

BTW, can you use a site-name instead of an IP address? That might be
convenient.

Not in Windows FTP, no.

You can FTP to an IP, a domain, even a windows server name if the
network is reasonably configured.

FWIW: A domain name is just a pointer to an IP address. You can almost
always use a domain name in place of an IP address - at least as long
as the host system can translate it for you using an available DNS
server.

The only places IP's are "required" (generalization) is in network
settings for things like DNS servers. For example, your router needs
an IP address for the DNS server itself because it can't lookup any
names until it know where the server is (catch-22).

was too lazy to research it myself :-)

In effect, my question was "Does FTP use DNS". As I said, Nil answered
that.

It didn't take any real "research" - it took opening a command window
and trying it for myself. I already knew the answer, but that confirmed
it.

The general answer to your question is that nearly all network
utilities do.
