RE: Getting Local Folders Back In Windows Live Mail

I like your approach, which allows me to use message rules to sort all my
incoming mail to folders within the "Local Folders" folder. I think N.
Miller's approach doesn't allow application of rules to the folder he or she
created.

I've yet to try your approach but it appears to be the solution to the very
aggravating problem I discovered when I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and
downloaded Live Mail, namely, the disappearance of "Local Folders." I
subsequently found that I was never sure whether I was seeing all my email
activity when I used "find," as that was my preferred tool used to ensure
that I was on top of incoming mail and could find stuff I'd sent, etc., etc.

The quick views were very unsatisfactory to me (unmodifiable to show read as
well as unread msgs, for example) and I couldn't find a way of searching on
just one folder or setting up a quick view to give me the functionality under
the previous version of Mail (under Vista).

The objection that what you've stored in the new artificial Local Folders
folder you've created will disappear if you delete the account is not a major
one. As you or someone observed, you get a warning notice and can move
folders you want to keep to "Storage Folders." Anyway, deleting an account is
a big deal and why would one do that in all but the most unusual of
circumstances?

Thanks for your creative solution. All my hair is already gray but you may
have prevented it from getting any grayer! :-)

I don't even know what you are talking about. Lack of quoting, and an MID$
that points to a post no longer available on either the MS NNTP servers, or
Google Groups.

However, the MSOE "Local Folders" are the analog to the WLMail "Storage
folders". And POP3 email rules work the same in either client. Any user
created folders under the local accounts don't have an analog in MSOE, and I
can't prove that email rules will work with them. I've never tried. I've
created my user folders under "Storage folderes".

**On 5/30/2009, Buford T Justice started the thread with:

First thing you will need to do is add a dummy e-mail account. Click on ADD
E-MAIL ACCOUNT in WLM. For the e-mail address, use none@xxxxxx with the
password of none and the name as Local Folders. Check the box in front of
MANUALLY CONFIGURE and click NEXT. The POP3 and SMTP servers will both be
none.com and the username will be none. Click NEXT then FINISH.

Now you will have an e-mail account with a funky name. Something like None
(Local Folders) or maybe None (None). Something like that. Anyway,
right-click once on this new e-mail account then left-click once on
PROPERTIES.

On the GENERAL tab, the mail account name needs to be changed from whatever
it is to Local Folders. Uncheck the box in front of "Include this
account..." Click APPLY then OK.

Now the account name is Local Folders. Right-click once on it then
left-click on MOVE UP. Repeat this until Local Folders is at the top of the
list of accounts assuming you have more than one.
...........

**Noel's reply states the reason why creating a dummy account is preferred
to using Storage folders.

Just to comfort BTJ with the comment that I have been using a
similar arrangement (the difference being that the dummy account is
set up to use my default account's SMTP server) ever since I
discovered that Storage folders couldn't be (permanently) moved from
the bottom of the folder tree. It's just too much hassle always to
have to scroll down to find user-defined folders. And I can't
imagine why I should ever want to remove this dummy account, nor
delete it by accident.

Not only do I still recommend it (until such time as the devs make
it possible to relocate Storage folders in the folder tree, that
is), I have been advocating it for the last two years to those
struggling to manage multiple POP accounts. And it's become even
more useful since POP access was introduced for Hotmail accounts. I
now use POP for routine downloading from Hotmail, so that messages
get diverted by rules to the proper folders. Then, once in a while,
I sync my Hotmail accounts just to check the junk and to make sure
that ephemeral messages are deleted. Best of all worlds.
